Cartographer

Cartographer is a typeface designed in 2011 for our book “Mapy”.

First, all the glyphs were drawn with a 0.1 mm tip pen, in very small scale. At the beginning Cartographer had only uppercase characters, but eventually we drew lowercase characters, and a set of Cyrillic and Greek characters. This was done gradually over time, while we were preparing new foreign editions of “Mapy”.

Cartographer has lots of useful features, including discretionary ligatures, stylistic alternates, fractions, ordinals and contextual alternates that will automatically set alternate glyphs depending on frequency of appearance of the same character (even in web font, but only in HTML5 browsers).

Cartographer was designed to look good in small size in a very specific project. We’ve never used it in any other way, but other people keep finding new implementations, which are always a big surprise for us.

You can buy it on MyFonts.
